April 3-7

Hello Families!
Here's a sneak peek at our week...
During Writers' Workshop, we decorated our poems for our Poetry Anthology on Monday. On Tuesday, we each completed a pre-assessment for our new narrative writing unit. Then we began the unit on Wednesday. We started by thinking of a realistic character. We thought about what s/he would look like on the outside and what s/he would be like on the inside. On Thursday, we began our first story about our character. We learned how to plan for our new book.

During Readers' Workshop, we reviewed "Just-Right" books. We spent two days with the book Upstairs Mouse, Downstairs Mole, focusing on having strong book talks with others and determining the author's intended message. We also began our new unit, applying some previously learned skills to our new, more involved books.

We learned that when we preview a book, we should read the blurb on the back cover or inside front cover. This will give us information to help us get our minds ready to read.

Chapter titles also help get our minds ready to read.

During Word Work we worked with partners to complete a "blind sort." Our partners also assisted us with our individual spelling lists this week.

We also spent time on Spelling City getting to know our new words in the Teach Me section, practicing them in the Game section, and assessing ourselves in the Test section.

During Math Workshop this week, we have been exploring representing data, organizing it, sorting data into two categories, and asking and answering questions about the data using our the terms more, fewer, altogether, most and least.

We also spent some time practicing addition/subtraction facts.

During Science this week, we explored the question: What grows from the nodes of a potato? We also observed our garlic bulbs which we planted before spring break. What a surprise it was to find that our stem cuttings FINALLY grew roots! Now we know that we can grow a new plant from a plant.

Ask your first grader to tell you about eyes, stems, and nodes.

Next Tuesday we'll be taking our all-school photo. Be sure to have your first grader in BLUE. Thanks so much! Wednesday is an early release day, and Friday is a day off. This should all make for yet another speedy week - my, they sure are flying by!
Until then...
Michelle
