Happy Lunar New Year (almost)!

It's the Year of the Rooster! We learned all about Chinese New Year in our latest issue of Scholastic News and in the book Chinese New Year.

With the Presidential Inauguration upon us, we also read the book I Can Be President, Too! The 14 children in this book demonstrate a lot of characteristics that it takes to be president: diversity, fairness, leadership, honesty and more. We then thought about and shared characteristics that we each have that make us good leaders.

During Writers' Workshop we continued writing about our collections. We learned about elaboration as well as many more ways to write opinion writing well. We also found out that others might agree with our opinions or they might even disagree!

During Math Workshop we represented 2-digit numbers with 10-sticks and circles, we paid close attention to "pesky pairs" like 80 and 18 by looking closely at how many tens and ones each had, and we practiced a lot with adding a 1-digit number to a 2-digit number. Some of our friends were ready to try adding 2 2-digit numbers!

In Science, we continued our exploration of wind/air by building paper kites! The weather conditions weren't conducive to flying our kites outdoors, so we went to the gym and each had a turn flying our kites there - what fun!
