September 1-9

Hello First Grade Families!
Welcome to our blog! We had a great first six days together! Here's what we were up to:

During Writer's Workshop we've been busy creating class books based on some of our old favorites. We also completed our first writing assessment where we had 30 minutes to write a small moment narrative.
We created our own version of If You Take a Mouse to School! In our version, we each wrote about what we need to bring to school for first grade.
In Reader's Workshop we've been busy talking about ourselves as readers: 3 ways we read books, where we read, when we sneak in extra reading time and what Read to Self looks and sounds like. We've also been busy building our reading stamina!

During Math Workshop we've been adding to our anchor chart about mathematicians, discussing the difference between tools and toys,  learning new math games such as Cover the Board, Ten Frame Top It, One More, One Less, Ten Frame Game and Roll & Build, and practicing our math rotations.

We've also been learning about our friends through King and Queen of the Day! This is an opportunity for us to look closely at our friends' names. We clap the syllables, count the vowels and consonants and make sure they add up to the total letters, find and write words and word patterns, practice printing them, build them, determine the missing letter, and cheer them! We also interview the King and Queen to learn more about them! Here are last week's King and Queens!

We participated in the PBIS Round Up and learned about the Stormonth Way in the hallways, bathrooms, lunchroom and bus lines. Ask your first grader to tell you how s/he can be Safe, Respectful and Responsible in each of these locations. On Friday we practiced our first fire drill and did an amazing job! Way to go, First Graders! I'm so proud of you!

We're off to a terrific start in first grade! Next week, we'll continue to learn about the routines and expectations of our classroom community, continue to learn about ourselves as readers including how to pick a just-right book, continue to learn how to work with partners and small groups during math rotations, and much more! Until then...
