Hello Families!
Can you believe we're halfway through first grade? It's true! We couldn't let this milestone go by unnoticed, so we spent Monday celebrating 90 days in first grade! All of the first grade classes rotated around to each first grade teacher for a special Halfway Day Project! In Mrs. Grambow's class, we explored fractions with playdoh. Here are some photos:
In Mrs. Hogue's class, we used iPads to scan QR codes which showed us half the face of a Stormonth teacher. We then had to write the name of that teacher on our recording sheet. In Mrs. Hauck's class, we listened to half of a story and wrote the second half. In our classroom we completed half of a famous painting. Here are some photos:
During Writers' Workshop this week we finished up our opinion pieces about the collections we brought to school. Next we'll move on to writing persuasive reviews. Our focus will be on restaurants, games, hotels/waterparks, vacation spots, movies, and more! I encourage you to have conversations with your writer about what s/he is focusing on and how s/he is persuading his/her reader to go to a favorite restaurant, to see a favorite movie, or to play a well-loved game.
During Readers' Workshop, we continue to focus on strategies we can use when we come to tricky words. We created a new chart which divided our strategies into three categories: Does that make SENSE? Does that SOUND right? and Does that LOOK right? These are three questions to always ask your reader as s/he is solving a tricky word.
During Math Workshop, we added with groups of ten, used place value to compare double digit numbers and added tens or ones to numbers. We are finding that it can be tricky sometimes to add tens and then STOP to COUNT on by ones.
During Science, we learned more about the moon by reading Gail Gibbons' The Moon Book. We've been charting the phases of the moon on a calendar. In our science notebooks we showed the moon in relation to the Earth and the Sun and showed what the new moon, full moon, first quarter and last quarter moon phases each look like.
On Friday we enjoyed chicken soup with rice!
Please plan to join us for Parent Literacy Information Night on Monday evening, February 13th at Stormonth from 6:30-8:00 pm. This night is for parents of ALL grade levels at Stormonth! Dessert and coffee will be served!! Learn more about how we teach reading at Stormonth and how YOU can coach your beginning or more advanced reader at home. Join us for a fun informational session...and you might come home with a RAFFLE PRIZE!! RSVP to either me or the front office. Thanks much!
Next week we'll enjoy jazz music during an assembly on Thursday!
